ACT UPDATE   January, 2003

Dear Friends,

The Amazon Conservation Team is pleased and proud to announce the release of a groundbreaking map of the Tumucumaque reserve in northeastern Brazil. The result is better protection of 10 million acres of rainforest! Please see our website for our press release, images, and further information on this initiative.

MSNBC featured the mapping project in a wonderful article online.

Brazil is not ACT's only program in the news—our Suriname Program has been included in UNESCO/Nuffic's compilation of Best Practices Using Indigenous Knowledge. What this means is that our Shaman's Apprentice Integrated Healthcare Clinics in the northeast Amazon are considered to be among the most innovative, effective, and culturally sensitive efforts in the world!

Look for additional info on the UNESCO evaluation.

Finally, ACT is planning to move ahead on the next phase of mapping in the eastern Amazon. We need to raise $10,000 to convene a meeting of the chiefs of 14 different tribes in order to protect another 6 million acres of rainforest. We welcome your donations to fund this urgent intiative!

Thank you again for your continued encouragement and support.
